I think back now and I cant believe how much work I've accomplished. When I first bought her there was an incredible amount of rust.
If you want to see pictures go here. I could literally put my finger 75% of the way through each sill.
And put my finger, or first a screwdrier through a portion in her trunk! The wheel wells had plenty of rust also. So I had a donar squareback
that was willing (can a car be willing?!) to be sacrificed. Over a 6-8 months period of taking the 2 cars and "putting them together" I finally have a rust-free pan.
During that "Rustoration" I POR-15ed the pan, top and bottom. To paint the bottom of the floor pan properly I had to strip the entire pan
with paint stripper, that stuff is DISGUSTING! and boy did that BURN when it touched yor skin! But I did it, and finished it. I made sure to let it bake out in the sun
for a doy or so once i was finished. We finally got everything welded back up, im making this sound easy but it wasnt. I just dont want to go into a big story of the whole thing.
So now she's sitting in my garage waiting for me. The past 2 years have gone by quickly, with me being in college and everything. I wish i only hd more time and money to put
into her. But doesnt everyone want that?!
History
Her first owner bought her new in Washington, when she was 14, for her first car. I am guessing that she bought a new car and let Emma sit in tall grass for a long while. There was sand in the front trunk and I am also guessing that she lived on the coast for a while and I know ocean salt is bad news for any car. Then in 1999 her 2nd owner bought her and only owned her for 6-8 months and drove her for less than 20 miles, she said it popped and made alot of noise...and knew nothing of Volkswagons... So i bought her in May 2000 for $600 and stored her in my garage as I prepared her body for a complete rustoration.
Here
are some pictures of type three's. There are three versions. A
Notchback, Squareback and a fastback. The Notchback and
Squareback were introduced earlier than the Fastback(coming soon the history of type threes) The white car in the left corner is a Notchback the car underneath that is
a Squareback and underneath that is a Fastback. On the other side
it seems to be they are stripping down the body (s) of a Notch
and a Squareback.
Thanks to John Jaranson for this really cool cartoon fastback at the top of this page!!
